Memorial Day is one of those holidays many of us associate with the start of summer, long weekends, and time with family. But its history goes much deeper.
The observance dates back to the years after the Civil War, when communities began setting aside time to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers. For many years, it was known as Decoration Day, which is what I remember hearing when I was younger.
It later became the national Memorial Day holiday we know today, dedicated to honoring the men and women who lost their lives while serving our country.
Here in the East Bay, we’re fortunate to have local places where the community can gather and reflect, including observances in Danville and San Ramon. Memorial Park in San Ramon, at Bollinger Canyon Road and San Ramon Valley Boulevard, is especially meaningful with its beautiful memorial sculpture.
However you spend the weekend, it’s worth knowing the history behind the day and the reason so many communities pause to remember.
