Catheter securement has evolved. Has your practice?
The recently published GAVeCeLT-IVAS bundle for the Safe Insertion of Midline Catheters: The SIMiC protocol states the following: Suturing catheters is an outdated practice, widely discouraged by most current guidelines due to increased risks of exit-site infection, dislodgement, tissue damage, and needlestick injuries.
“Subcutaneous anchorage is more effective than skin devices at preventing dislodgement while allowing for more thorough 360° skin antisepsis around the exit site, potentially reducing the risk of infection. For patients at high risk of dislodgement, including those with diaphoresis, skin abnormalities, or non-collaborative patients, it should be the preferred securement strategy.”
