Every couple of months somebody tells me SEO is dead. Usually they just read a headline about zero-click search. The number behind it is real. In early 2026 about 68% of Google searches ended without anyone clicking a website, up from around 60% two years ago. Google answers more of the question itself now.
Here is what actually died. The lazy version. Drop a keyword on a page, write three hundred words nobody reads, wait for Google to reward you. That stopped working a while ago.
What still works for a local business is less glamorous. A Google Business Profile that is current. Honest answers to the questions your customers actually ask. Reviews from the people you helped last month. That is how you show up now, often before anyone clicks anything.

Saturday thought for the owners who actually read these on the weekend.
The businesses I watch pull away from everyone else in their town are rarely the ones with the cleverest ads or the biggest budget. They are the ones who got clear first. They know exactly who they serve, what that person is afraid of, and why picking them is the obvious call. Once that is locked in, the tactics get easy, because every ad and every post is just pointing at something true.
Most owners run it backwards. They chase the tactic, the new platform, the funnel somebody swore by at a conference, and they keep wondering why none of it sticks. It does not stick because there is nothing solid underneath it to stick to.

You can buy more leads. You can run more ads, boost more posts, and hand another agency five thousand dollars to point traffic at a business that still says one thing on its website and something different on Facebook. A lot of owners do exactly that. Then they wonder why the leads come in and sit in an inbox until they go cold.
The leads were never the bottleneck. The thing underneath them was. When the offer changes depending on who is asking, and nobody can say in one sentence who you are for and why a customer should pick you over the four other shops in town, more traffic just means more people bouncing off the same fog.
