April is Autism Awareness Month

A History Fact you should know:

Autism Awareness Month was founded in April 1970 by Bernard Rimland, Ph. D., a psychologist and autism researcher. He chose the month of April to coincide with his son’s birthday, as well as the start of spring—a time for new beginnings.

As someone who has spent decades serving our community—in education, public safety, and now as a candidate for Mayor of Pontiac—I understand the importance of creating a city where everyone is seen, supported, and celebrated.

Autism is not a limitation—it’s a different way of experiencing the world. That’s why, during this month and beyond, I remain committed to advocating for inclusive policies, stronger mental health support, and accessible city services for families and individuals impacted by autism.

My campaign is about building a Pontiac where all our neighbors—regardless of ability—can thrive. Let’s lead with compassion, awareness, and action.
