Did you know that a fetus depends on the mother’s thyroid hormone for the first 24 weeks?

The fetal brain develops rapidly between weeks 12 and 22 of gestation, which means that optimal thyroid hormone from the mother is essential for fetal brain development.

👉Have you been thinking of having a baby?
👉Been trying for a while?
👉Or have you experienced miscarriage(s)?

If you answered YES to any of the above, getting your thyroid thoroughly checked is a must - even if you’re not having symptoms!

Hypothyroidism in pregnancy has been shown to increase the risk of:

🚫Miscarriage
🚫Placental abruption
🚫And lower IQ scores in children

When you’re planning to conceive, having enough thyroid hormone is so absolutely essential that it’s important to test for any dysfunction, not just full-blown hypothyroidism.

You want to ask for a full thyroid panel with antibodies to see if you have the autoimmune condition (elevated antibodies confirms this). The tests to ask for are:

✔️TSH
✔️Free T4
✔️Free T3
✔️TPO
✔️And TG antibodies

It’s recommended to treat with replacement thyroid medication when the TSH is over 2.5 (some experts like to see it under 2.0), positive antibodies, or when clinical signs coincide with basal body temperatures below 97°F.

📌The starting dose is typically 25mcg or 50 mcg of Levothyroxine (Synthroid), a synthetic form of T4. It’s important to retest every 4-6 weeks to ensure you’re at the correct dose.

📌If TSH is below 2.50, but Free T3 is at the low end or out of range, this may be a signal that your liver is not converting T4 into active T3 efficiently. In this case, a more functional approach is needed, but medication may still be helpful to increase available T3.

Wondering whether you’re producing enough thyroid hormone? If so, I’d love to personally invite you to schedule a free consultation with me. Link below✨

Can we talk about body size and fertility?
Have you been told that you’re “too fat” to get pregnant or go through IVF?

A few years ago, came out with an article called "When You’re Told You’re Too Fat to Get Pregnant" that tells Gina's 7 year fertility journey. She was 317 pounds when a fertility doctor told her that she can't do IVF because she's too fat.⠀

1️⃣ a woman should never be talked to that way by anyone, no less a doctor. Due to this experience, it took her 2 years before she got a second opinion.

2️⃣ being overweight does not cause infertility, and the vast majority of overweight women can become pregnant and have healthy pregnancies.

3️⃣ it is a horrible stigma to assume that a woman is not fit or designed for motherhood because of her weight.

WITH THAT SAID... Increased weight DOES increase time-to-pregnancy, pregnancy complications, and risk for epigenetic consequences for the baby. The research is pretty clear. It makes sense that fertility clinics proceed with caution when weight is a variable, due to the risks involved. ⠀

If you've been told that losing weight might help you conceive, then what? Is bariatric surgery or 12-week liquid diets the solution? NO. ⠀

Work with a integrative team! WEIGHT LOSS IS NOT THE GOAL, 👉🏼HEALTH IS THE GOAL.

Work with a well-physician to:
✅ help balance hormones
✅ improve nutrient stores
⠀..which ultimately improves:
✅ egg quality
✅ ovulation
✅ endometrial lining.

Our focus isn't on the scale, but on how YOU FEEL, the health of your menstrual cycle, and your PARTNER'S HEALTH.⠀

There’s a reason we refer to the postpartum period as the 4th trimester....because it’s just as much a part of the pregnancy journey (and just as physically and emotionally demanding) as the time your baby is actually inside of you.⠀

But I’d like to suggest the same distinction for the 3 months before pregnancy, or as I like to call it, the Preconception Trimester!⠀

While you might not have started growing your baby yet, your health, diet, nutrient status, and lifestyle during the 3 months before you conceive have a HUGE influence on your ability to provide your baby everything he or she needs during pregnancy and can even determine his or her long-term risk for certain health problems!⠀

We need to start thinking about the preconception timeframe as a critical part of pregnancy - the part where we do everything in our power to prepare our bodies to support and sustain the incredible miracle of growing an entire human from scratch💕⠀
