Putting the fun in bike racing. Portland style!

06/26/2021

IMPORTANT UPDATE: WE WILL START SUNDAY'S RACE 1 HOUR EARLY (START AT 9:00AM)!

We have been monitoring the hot weather forecast for Sunday and have decided to start the race one hour earlier, to minimize racers' time out in the high heat.

At this point, the weather forecast for Government Camp calls for a high of 90F (by 4pm), which is pretty hot, but not as hot as some of the previous editions, where temps went well past the mid 90s, without causing any heat-related issues. Still, we want everyone to be safe and responsible (apply and re-apply sunscreen, hydrate regularly, etc) and please monitor yourself, your relay partners and fellow racers for any signs of heat-related illness. When the weather is hot, it is better to pace yourself than to push yourself.

In addition to the early start, we have decided that solo racers will only do the solo-only section (up and down Gnar-Gnar) on their first lap and then use the same course as the two-person relay racers on any subsequent laps.

Hello, everyone!

Last week, the Oregon Bike Race Association (OBRA) made the decision to suspend all OBRA-sanctioned bike races throughout the end of May. This decision seems prudent and is in line with the official COVID-19 measures issued by local and state governements.

Currently, there is a general consensus that any easing of measures in the coming months will happen in a gradual fashion and we can realistically expect that restrictions will remain in place - at least through the end of May, but likely longer - for any public events where the current 6-foot social distancing guidelines between participants cannot be warranted.

Given the unique race format and social setting of the Portland Short Track Series - and out of an abundance of caution for the safety of our racers and volunteers - we have decided to postpone the start of the 2020 Series to Monday July 6. In the hope/assumption that local and state governments will allow sporting events by that date and OBRA deems it safe to do so, we plan to run the Portland Short Track Series from Monday July 6 through Monday August 24.

Obviously, there are a lot of if's and it is anyone's guess how things will evolve in the next weeks and months. While we are hopeful that we will be able to bring back the fun of Short Track racing at PIR this summer, we realize that we will have to be patient and likely will have to adjust plans based on any new developments - good or bad. Given all these uncertainties, we have decided to hold off on the online sale of "Early Bird" Series Passes.

Cheers,
~Kris
