For our latest “Oh, the Humanities” podcast episode, Josh sat down with David Bennell, who has created and led sustainability programs at Fortune 500 companies, global NGOs, and philanthropic foundations, and has recently brought his expertise to the UNE College of Business.

Their wide-ranging conversation covered such topics as the Cuyahoga River catching on fire during David’s youth in Ohio, the demise of a robust Atlantic Cod fishery in the Gulf of Maine, whether AI can help solve our climate crisis, and how UNE students and faculty are working across traditional disciplinary boundaries to create a healthier world. Throughout the talk, the importance of the humanities to the environmental and sustainability movements kept coming up, too.

I can’t wait for the next UNE President’s Forum event, which will take place in the Alfond Forum on the Biddeford Campus, and via livestream, on Monday, April 6 at 6 p.m. It’s free and open to the public, and I welcome our local neighbors to join UNE students, faculty, and professional staff for what is certain to be a lively exchange of ideas, with robust audience participation.

This event, “Universities Under Fire: Perceived Faculty Bias, Government Backlash, and the Battle for Public Trust,” will feature two esteemed UNE Philosophy professors, Drs. Andrew Rotondo and John Waterman, who will examine the politicization of higher education in America. The discussion will explore whether the Trump administration’s actions toward higher education represent necessary countermeasures to restore ideological balance and public trust in the academy, or if they reflect dangerous authoritarian overreach.

Since its inception in 2018, the Forum has showcased the academy’s role as a marketplace of ideas, where diverse perspectives on challenging topics are discussed with civility and respect. Please join us next month!
