The hundred languages of children is a major philosophy within the Reggio-Emilia method of teaching. We are so inspired by this at our private school, Emerald Jade Early Learning.

During traditional American holidays, I always ask myself “how can I teach this in an inspiring, organized, and meaningful way for the children, without harming any family beliefs, holidays they celebrate at home, and traditions each individual child already practices?” I am always brought back to this 100 languages theory system. The next few weeks, we will be exploring “100 ways to use and explore eggs during spring time.”

Project Idea: Our adult/guide/teacher tells the children a story about a bunny who has to go shopping for eggs. She is hosting a huge celebration, and she needs a very correct amount of eggs to have at her party. She sends invitations to each friend, and they send number cards back with the amount of eggs they would like. The children work at a farm, and they will help us succeed in this goal. We placed the card in front of the bunny’s house (that the children also helped us build!) and they chose the correct amount. These imaginary stories without pages, illustrations, or printed words can be so incredibly meaningful for learning. It is a very open ended way to include your child in where they want the story to go, what animals will be the characters, and to help inspire them to latch on to the ideas within the verbal story. You can include props, puppets, stuffed animals, and so much more to enhance these provocation based stories. They are so much fun, and it makes learning mathematics so easy for littles!
