Floating World Comics

1 day into CXC and I’m in love with this show. I think it was Tom Spurgeon’s vision for CXC to be the Angoulême of the US. Every cartoonist needs to make a pilgrimage to the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum and treat themselves to behind the scenes, high security, climate controlled tour with curator Caitlin McGurk. This is the largest collection of original comics art and archival newspaper comics pages in the world, including over 2 million pieces from the Bill Blackbeard library. The librarians and researchers here are ensuring that these collections will endure far past our lifetimes. The collection is accessible through the research library, which is open to the public and their scanning facilities help produce many of the deluxe reprint collections on your shelves. They also have an amazing Carol Tyler exhibit in the museum and an revelatory group show called Motion Lines, where I could see original pages by Kirby next to Gould and Watterson and Bagge and really compare and contrast the different styles on display.

We’re hosting a special screening of the Alex Garland penned (and possibly directed, according to Karl Urban) 2012 action-classic, the Drokk-tastic Dredd!

Hosted by Floating World’s owner Jason Levian, the store will be on site to sell a bunch of super cool stuff – including Judge Dredd comics, the limited edition event poster by Grim Wilkins, and so much more!

Mega City One is a vast, violent metropolis where felons rule the streets.
