Why use different words than pain or contractions?

When we use words like pain we picture getting a shot or maybe bumping your knee on a table. When we have negative associations like that our body knows to flinch to protect us. However when you are trying to relax into the sensations of labor thinking of how much pain you‘re experiencing can do more harm than good. Instead of thinking wow this hurts, we try to think “wow this is intense”; or “wow this is a transformational feeling.“

Did you use the words contraction/pain or did you opt to change them out for softer words?

Thank you so much Emma! This was one of the most special births I’ve attended to date. Being in the birth room for your cousin is such a different and wonderful experience compared to a typical client. Seeing the joy and strength in the birthing room was so beautiful. I loved getting to be there for family 🥰❤️
