She thought they were stopping at Smith Rock just to take in the views…
Instead, it became the moment her story changed forever.
They had spent a long weekend in Central Oregon celebrating their anniversary—exploring the scenic places they love, browsing her favorite local shops, and enjoying some of their go-to restaurants in the area.
On the drive home, they stopped at Smith Rock State Park to stretch their legs and enjoy the view before the three-hour trip back.
What she didn’t know…
That “little detour” had been planned for weeks. Her parents and future in-laws had also made the three-plus-hour drive from Southwest Washington, and I traveled down to photograph the surprise.
When they arrived, I stayed hidden and disguised so I wouldn’t be spotted. Their family waited above until the couple was far enough down the trail, giving everyone the perfect vantage point for what was about to happen.
I followed them down the trail, and when the time was right, I stepped out and began capturing the moment. She was completely surprised—shocked, giddy, and overjoyed.
Then the cheers came from above. She turned around and saw her family—and then me.
It’s a memory they’ll carry forever, captured in images they can revisit for the rest of their lives.

Happy Throwback Thursday!
This week flew by! While looking through old photos, I came across several images I had never shared before. Here’s a series from White Sands National Park in New Mexico, captured back in 2022.
It was an incredible park to explore, and I had a great time photographing sunset on my own. In every direction, the dunes stretched endlessly, with the changing light creating beautiful, colorful landscapes. The only challenge was that the park closes its gates at night, so I ended up running and speed-walking through the sand, drenched in sweat, trying to get back to my truck. I was one of the last people out before the gates were closed and locked behind me.
I hope you enjoy this set from the five hours I spent exploring the dunes. White Sands is such a unique place, and in some of these images, you can see just how massive the dunes are compared to the people walking through them. I can’t wait to return one day soon!
