Last year, as part of a DesignInquiry project, Steve Bowden, Peter Evonuk and I conceived of a roundabout way to make a typeface respond to live tidal data. The journey involved sharp implements, fire, molten bronze, and milk. The final result is a digital typeface that changes with water level readings coming from a NOAA buoy of the coast of Maine.

Remember the tide cycles slowly over the course of the day, so leave a browser tab open and check it throughout the day.
Low Tide Typeface This typeface was created for DesignInquiry in 2015 by Steve Bowden, Neil Patel and Peter Evonuk. The adjacent specimen is responding to live tidal data from a NOAA buoy near Vinalhaven island. Over the course of the day, the forms will interpolate as the water level rises and falls.
