This is what a beaver habitat field day looks like!🦫 Field days are always an adventure. We hope you'll join Bark this summer to help us gather data to protect and restore Mt. Hood – no experience necessary!

"On April 23rd we trekked out to the Sluice Creek complex to assess some ponds. When we arrived at the first pond we immediately had to change into rubber boots if we hadn't already because there was a lot of mud and a shallow stream to wade through. The pond at this site wasn't very promising for potential beaver relocation – it was small and lacked the woody foods that beavers love.

"We hiked out further to Slide Creek, where we found a huge old beaver dam – about 95.8 meters long! We needed 4 people to measure it. This pond was more promising for future beaver relocation.

"We spent lots of time here admiring all of the newts floating around and watching birds while trying to keep our balance on the uneven, wet, and muddy terrain. This was the kind of mud that will take the boots right off your feet if you're not careful. At one point I lost my balance and fell backward into a shallow area of the pond. I learned a lesson that day – always bring an extra change of clothes!"

The Clackamas River Ranger District of Mt Hood National Forest just released the Draft Environmental Assessment (EA) for the “Anvil Vegetation Management Project." Bark staff and volunteers have been tracking this project for over a year, including extensive groundtruthing surveys last summer. There is a public comment period open until June 19th, so let’s get together to workshop our comments and speak up for Mt Hood!

Bark’s Forest Watch Program Manager, Jordan Latter, will give an overview of the project, how it got to its current state, and what Bark’s current concerns are. You’ll learn a bit about what makes a good public comment, tips for what to include in your own, and a chance to brainstorm with fellow Bark activists. NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY!!!
