Song Breakdown #2
"Failure's Not an Option"
Truthfully, the music to this song took somewhere near 10 years to coalesce. It began with the 13 count intro and bled into the open chords that I knew one day would have sweeping arpeggios over it.... This was in 2009 or so.
Over time, the song had been written and rewritten in many variations, but not everything felt right. Some things were discarded, and sometimes a piece would stay.
When we finally entered the studio with the backbone of the track, our producer for this song (Frank Torres) Said, I don't know how all of this is going to work together.
He took a few weeks to enhance and edit down drums, and create some ideas that helped pique our interest.
All the main riffs were there, but no leads and only Stone's vocals for the verses.
It seemed bare bones, sporadic, and at times chaotic. There were so many ideas all crammed into one song. Progressive movements, death metal riffs, deathcore breaks that lasted for a long time, odd time signatures... the works.
Everything came together marvelously when we finally brought in the people we'd selected and worked with to guest star on the track. Riley McShane- Vocals and Matt Wannamaker & Bel DImuzio for guitar solos and leads.
It was like watching a masterpiece finally come to fruition! Years of hard work culminating in what is a tour-de-force of a track!
I distinctly remember a lot of cheering, shouting, gasping in awe, as each new addition was brought to the table and laid down over the song.
Lyrically, "Failure..." is about breaking from the societal and psychological chains culture imposes upon us as individuals. Its is a call to recognize that we, ourselves, hold the key to our own salvation. Not religion. Not your governments. Not your career. All of these things were created to box in your thoughts and your heart and confine you to some numerical definition of what a human is.
This was the path I had been taking while writing the lyrics and felt obligated to share. Despite all the tragedy around me, and all I'd been working through, I knew that I was more... and was destined to become more.
We hope it inspires you as well.
