Let’s talk Omega-6 to Omega-3 ratios real quick. Most Americans have a 4:1 disproportionate Omega-6 to Omega-3 ratio in their average diet. Yeah… you read that right. The average American is eating 4x the amount of Omega-6’s compared to the Omega-3s that they should be eating! Most research has pointed to health ratio looking like a 2:1 or even 1:4 for proper health.
Both Omega (6 & 3) essential fatty acids are crucial for your body staying healthy and not getting sick (hence why they are called “essential”). However, Omega-6s tend to be more pro-inflammatory, while Omega-3s play more of an anti-inflammatory role. Cell membranes found to be high in Omega-6 are strongly associated with the risk of heart disease. Most Omega-6’s in todays diet comes from seeds and vegetable oils (which is in almost everything that is cooked at restaurants). Soybean oil, Corn oil, and Sunflower oil are some of the popular culprits.
Omega 3s on the other hand, which can come from fish and Micro-Algae, have been found to reduce inflammation, help with brain, eye, and heart health.
