Women have always played a vital role in jazz. From the very first jazz recordings of Louis Armstrong, over 100 years ago, Lil Hardin Armstrong, his wife, played piano and composed for the band. She wrote the classic “Struttin’ with some Barbecue”.

She was also very aware of Louis’ appearance, presentation and
marketing. As his wife, she insisted that he have control to the rights of his music. Her college education and business acumen helped Armstrong but helped her too. They fought over ownership of “Struttin’” and she won in court.

Sexism in the arts has a long history going back centuries. It is thanks to fastidious women like Lil Hardin Armstrong that the rights of women artists is no longer just for the “good ole boys club.”
