"My mom was like an ace pilot landing a plane in a storm. She and my dad created the flight plan for the family. They had the forethought for me to share a bedroom with my much older sister even though they could have converted a den for me. I think about this arrangement often. Maybe the plan was to put raw dough (me) into the proofing oven (my sister’s bedroom), so I would rise into a perfect angel roll. I’m no angel, but the proofing worked because I love my sister and always wanted to be just like her. If she did dance class, I did dance class too. She sang in the choir, and so did I. When she got a retainer, I pretended with a paper clip to have one, too. As we got older, she made the ultimate sacrifice and let me hang with her friends. And when we were old enough for dating, we rated each other’s boyfriends with stars – like critics do with movies. She only gave one guy a five-star rating – the man who became my husband. Using the Structure Zone superpower, my parents saw how incredibly sweet, responsible, and smart my sister was, so I guess they hoped some of it would rub off on me. When my sister went to study abroad in Italy, we remained incredibly close. There was no Skype back then, so we would compose two-hour cassettes talking about every intimate detail of our lives and send them back and forth across the Atlantic. That sacred pact continues. Every year, we take sisterly vacations together where we totally let our hair down."
