Approximately 80% of Native-held forests are now managed by Tribal Nations through self-governance or co-management agreements.

That marks a major shift — and a complete reversal from when the first IFMAT report was released in 1993.

This transition reflects decades of Tribal leadership, advocacy, and stewardship reclaiming decision-making over forest management systems rooted in long-term responsibility to the land and future generations. 🌲

The Indian Trust Asset Management demonstration project (ITARA) expires June 22, 2026 — and we need the Secretary of Interior to extend it NOW.

ITARA gives Tribes the authority to manage their own trust assets — forests, natural resources, and lands — on their own terms. Letting it expire would be a step backwards after 50 years of hard-won self-governance progress.

That's a wrap on the 49th Annual National Indian Timber Symposium. 🌲

Day 4 closed out four days of learning, connection, and action — with the ITC President's Report, concurrent workshops on biomass, fire management, self-governance, and forest inventory, followed by the Annual Business Meeting and Awards Banquet.

✏️Highlight: The ITC Board and Delegates gathered to celebrate the Wilcox and Picard Award recipients — honoring the leaders and legacy-makers of Tribal forestry. All workshops were held at the College of Menominee Nation, a fitting home for this gathering.
