Hey y’all, I’m excited about revisiting the Harlem Renaissance this Saturday with The Weary Blues performance, a tribute to Langston Hughes. I’m here about one week out trying to channel my inner Eubie Blake, playing a song from the very first black musical on Broadway, Shuffle Along, called “I’m Just Wild About Harry” — but very slowly.
Hope to see ya

In this time of falling, fading, and preparing, I'm feeling grateful for the things that come in to sustain us during the dark winter months — the company of friends, the embrace of family, the soothing warmth of a mug of coffee (or tea) by candle light, and the solace of famiilar songs that carry us through year after year.
If those things strike a chord with you as well, and you are in Portland on Friday, December 12th, I invite you to join me for my final performance of the year. I'll be performing with the award-winning Portland State University Chamber Choir in a concert titled "A Holiday Garden."
We'll be performing jazz versions of favorite carols arranged by my former colleague, composer Brad Hansen. I will also present my own trio set, revisiting music from my 2003 album Spirit and sharing a brand-new arrangement of Vince Guaraldi's "Christmas Time is Here" that I've been waiting over 15 years to perform! I hope to see you there.
Until then, here's a bit of my arrangement.🕯️

You would think I would know by now. But, somehow, I’m still surprised that even in the wake of milestones, red-letter days, and auspicious events, time’s inexorable march forward doesn’t slow even for a minute. Which is why it’s hard to fathom that it’s already been two weeks since my performance of David Schiff’s piano concerto with the Oregon Symphony — the premiere of a piece that I’d been working on for almost a year, and my debut as a concert soloist.
Over on Subst@ck you can find a few reflections.
Thanks also to Oregon ArtsWatch for reviewing the premiere and to Jason Quigley for capturing this moment. 🙏🏿
Is Uptown/Downtown jazz or classical? What do you think?
The world premiere of this piano concerto is this weekend: Oct. 31-Nov. 2!
VH1's Behind the Music edition of shedding the concerto.
Thanks to David Schiff for this illuminating and humbling experience. 🤣 Can't wait to hear it with the full power of the Oregon Symphony next week!
