This is one of those reminders I genuinely need myself.

Nature gives the brain a break from constant stimulation from screens, noise, and other demands. This is called attention restoration, and it helps refill your mental energy so you can think more clearly and stay organized.

Being outdoors also naturally leads to movement, and movement increases blood flow to the brain, improving focus and cognitive flexibility.

And then there is the dopamine piece. Sunlight helps regulate dopamine, one of the key neurotransmitters involved in attention and follow-through. For anyone who struggles with getting started or staying on task, that is not a small thing.

Even a short walk outside counts. ☀️

Step outside with no plan?? Excuse me? I teach planning for a living. 😄

But hear me out, because this is actually planner-approved. Stepping outside without an agenda gives your executive functions a true rest. Your brain gets to just BE in the moment.

That unstructured time is when the brain quietly recharges the energy it needs for all the planning and organizing you'll do later. The reset makes the structure work better.

So consider this your nudge. Wander around the block. Say yes to something random. Your wonderful brain will thank you for it. 🧠

Here's something I saw over and over in my 25 years of teaching: schools hand students a planner and expect them to magically know how to use it. Nobody teaches the skill. Then we wonder why the planner lives untouched at the bottom of a backpack.

Planning is a brain-based skill, and like any skill, it has to be taught.

That's why the Set Up Success™ Student Planner comes with its own mini-course. Short, animated videos walk students through exactly how to use each part, like using an annual calendar to get a clear picture of the future, keeping track of what needs to get done with a monthly calendar, and planning around after-school commitments to find their open time.

The lessons are bite-sized on purpose, most under 5 minutes, because we know how student attention works. And there are videos for parents too, so everyone learns the system together. No more nagging from the sidelines.

You'll have shared language and a shared plan. Find it on our website and at the link below. 🧠
