The following community ask comes from Carie and her Kindergarten Class at The Friends School in Portland:

“The Friends School of Portland’s kindergarten class hatches chicks in the classroom each spring. After hatching, the chicks are given to someone who wants to raise them for eggs.

This year we are hoping to connect with an urban farmer or two through The Resilience Hub that might want to add backyard chickens to their food acquisition plans. The un-sexed hatchlings will be ready to go to their forever homes by April 11th.

We hope y'all have planted all of the goodies you picked up at last weekend's Seed & Scion Swap! But did you plant too much (again?!) this year? Us too. Or maybe you're still looking for some plants you've yet to find. Fear not! We'll be hosting our annual plant swap at Mt. Joy Orchard as a preamble to their Spring Planting Party on May 13.

The Swap will take place from 9-10am (roughly), and we encourage any and all to stick around for a fun work day at the orchard. We'll be planting trees and blueberries, then Aaron Parker of Edgewood Nursery will run a grafting class. After that we'll be sheet mulching and tidying up to set the stage for a productive year of growing in community.

The Resilience Hub has awoken from winter hibernation - and just in time to announce our annual Souther Maine Seed & Scion Swap!

Each year, MOFGA generously donates seeds & scion wood from their spring swap to the Hub, knowing that our network has an inimitable capacity to share knowledge and resources. As always, we encourage you to bring your own seeds, scions, growing resources (tools, planters, etc.), homemade goodies, and other projects to freely share/trade - someone's sure to want it!

This year's event will feature a few workshops for those with a range of interests in growing:

-Grafting Fruit Trees w/ Aaron Parker of Edgewood Nursery
-Sowing Native Pollinators w/ Wild Seed Project
-Kid’s Seedballing Workshop w/ Courtney of Wild Migration
and hopefully more!

This event is kid-friendly, open & free to all in the community. We hope to see you there!

Tree pruning workshop? Free? Really?!

YUP! It's time for the trees at Mount Joy Orchard to get their yearly haircut so they continue to grow healthily and produce ample fruit for passersby (to ALSO take for free!).

The orchard has over 100 fruit trees, so we need help from you all to get the work done. We will start off with a 1-hour pruning workshop led by Aaron Parker of Edgewood Nursery, then take to the hill to practice our newly acquired (or honed) skills!
