I normally don’t use dark heavy frames for my paintings but for this moody seascape it felt right. I added some gold leaf to bring out the warm tones in the painting.

What do you think? Do we like the dark frame or prefer something lighter?

Just starting this huge painting… again! I actually painted the same image for my parents a few years ago but when they moved it somehow got a ton of mold damage while in storage and was not repairable. So, I’m going to paint it again. It’s a pretty big undertaking since it’s 5 feet long but I’m actually looking forward to seeing how my skills have changed and improved in the last few years

Also, if you’ve read this far and are curious why I would paint the whole thing first in this earth tone, I find it really helpful to get composition laid out and the values figured out right away. You can easily and quickly make corrections at this point before you move into the more complicated world of color!

Sometimes you just want to bring the forest inside 🌿

Painting is such an interesting process. There are parts where you feel excited about where it’s going and then suddenly you’re stuck and it feels like this might be the worst thing you’ve ever made. But if you keep pushing through you learn so much no matter how it turns out. Either way, there’s beauty in the process.
