This past year has held a depth I don’t think I’ve known until now. A constant undercurrent of not knowing whether my mom is going to stay Earthside—or for how long. A friend said to me a few months ago, “Your mother is your tether to the planet.” That landed deep.

There is something about the discomfort of life when it gets bumpy that also seems to bring out the most beautiful, open, and generous parts of people. Some of the sweetest moments and kindest gestures have happened this year. Support and love reaching out from those dearest to me, and from many people I’ve only just begun to know.

As I near the end of my thirties, I find myself reminding myself of what I know to be true for others: life isn’t always smooth, and it was never meant to be. Some of the most challenging seasons eventually pass, opening doors to the unimaginable.

What I know for sure is that community—and most specifically, a tight-knit circle of women—is my rock. My grounding. Some of the greatest loves of my life are my oldest friends, my newest friends, and those I haven’t met yet.

I am so grateful for the experience of knowing you all. And I wish for everyone to have at least one true friend like the many I am lucky enough to call home.
