The naming of "Spade and Archer Design Agency" was inspired by a truly surprising coincidence that occurred early in the life of Justin M. Riordan, company founder. While living in San Francisco and just beginning to date his now husband, Joe, he became passionate about reading San Francisco-based stories including Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City series and many of Dashiell Hammett's classic 1930’s noir thrillers. To his delight, while turning the pages of Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon Justin discovered he lived in the exact same apartment—891 Post Street No. 304— as main character Sam Spade, which was modeled after Hammett’s real-life apartment No.401 in the same building. In the story, Sam Spade and his partner, Miles Archer, own Spade and Archer Detective Agency.

Justin’s shock of realizing he was living in the same building as fictional Sam Spade and literary prodigy Dashiell Hammett led him to make one promise to himself — if he were ever to open a business it would be called “Spade and Archer.” Ten years later, he founded Spade and Archer Design Agency and made that dream come true with his passion for home staging and bringing sellers and buyers together for real estate success as the world’s first guaranteed home stager.

Ten years into business, Justin’s Spade and Archer doesn’t solve crimes, but they are design detectives.
