SPRING RUNNING PSA!
*
I know the warmer temps that are slowly but surely sneaking up in New England make it incredibly tempting to pick up where you left off…
BUT…
If you’ve taken the winter off from running, these are my 3 top recommendations:
1. Ease into it with only 1-2 days/week
2. Keep runs on the shorter side (20-30 mins). There is no shame in following a run/walk plan(ie: 2min run,1 min walk x 10) if it’s been 3+ months off from running. Gradually introducing your cardiovascular and muscular system to the demands of running.
3. Keep up with your strength training! If you haven’t strength trained, take this as your sign to start 😉.

If you’re like most runners, you already know the benefits of strength training:
- improved running economy
- faster race times
- fewer overuse injuries
But with busy schedules on top of running (especially if you’re training for a longer race), actually fitting in strength training on a regular basis to your weekly routine can be a challenge.
That’s why we at Starting Line created Run Stronger, a 12 week progressive strength training program designed by runners for runners- even the busy runners! Each week, you’ll be guided through 2 workouts with runner-specific exercises. In our experience going through the workout ourselves, each workout only takes between 20-25 minutes total. Meaning you can fit it into your day without having to dedicate hours at the gym. AND it requires minimal equipment - just a set of moderate dumbbells, a resistance band, and access to a stair or step.

Temps in the teens and “feels like” predictions in the negatives means the age old debate rears its ugly hear once again: dreadmill for winter miles or risk it on the debatable terrain and bone chilling weather?
The bottom line:
TREADMILL MILES ARE STILL MILES!
Don’t feel like you’re choosing the “lesser” option by choosing to run indoors when the weather is freezing or the roads or running paths are downright dangerous. You still get the similar stimulus to your body (including heart, lungs, and musculoskeletal system). And better to preserve your training by choosing the safer option if it could all come to a halt with the tiniest slip on ice!
