Coming soon: First Light Commons, a new waterfront park!

First Light Commons, previously referred to as Portland Harbor Common, received its new, permanent name following a rigorous, multi-stage selection process driven by community input.

The chosen name serves as a dual tribute: honoring the rich heritage of the indigenous Wabanaki people (often translated as "People of the Dawn Land") and commemorating the historic significance of the Underground Railroad in the region. The City Council voted to officially adopt the new name at its June 15 meeting.

Visit PortlandMaine.Gov/FirstLight to read additional background on the name's historical significance and a breakdown of the selection process.

First Light Commons is well underway in Phase 1 of construction and remains strictly on schedule. We are on track for an official opening this fall, stay tuned!
