We’ve been quiet for a while as we navigate some family challenges, but wanted to pop in to wish our neighbors happy holiday season!

Ducks go through 1-2 periods of moulting each year, and we’ve just entered our first moult of adult feathers. During this time our girls have a slightly bigger appetite, spend more time snoozing, often stop laying eggs, and of course drop their old feathers EVERYWHERE. Our backyard looks like there’s been a pillow fight šŸ˜†
When the new big girl feathers come in, they’re first known as ā€œpin feathersā€ as modeled here by our Bella. These are super sensitive and even have their own blood supply, which can make them susceptible to lots of blood loss if a shaft gets broken or damaged. We give our girls extra snacks and limit handling them during this time until the new feathers are in.

Sometimes when we’re grappling with state of our country, it’s helps to join a meeting of wise ladies. Here’s what they discussed today:

Fear isn’t a gardening strategy.

Today we met a Great Golden Sand Digger wasp. She was more than an inch long, a little scary looking, but really beautiful. She’s a helpful friend, preying on grasshoppers and crickets.

By leaning into curiosity instead of fear, we leave space for all of our helpful co-gardeners. It’s easier when we work with our ecosystem instead of against it.

Tour our bog filter to see how we keep the duck pool from getting too dirty while conserving lots of water (and time!) by not refilling it every day!

Today was The Great Potato Dig of 2025! 40 pounds!
