Our Story

ReClaim It! is our retail store where we sell materials gleaned from the "dump" - the Metro Transfer Station operated by Recology.

Our volunteer run store has many unique “finds” waiting to be put back to use or to different uses. Antiques, furniture, wood by the foot, tile by the pound, metals, vintage items, curiosities, artist materials …You never know what will turn up. The inventory changes constantly!

Visit us Wednesday – Sunday from 10am – 5pm at 1 N. Killingsworth (at Williams) in Portland, OR

Well, reduction of the waste of course but what does it even mean? “Waste reduction is also known as source reduction, the practice of using less materials and energy to minimize waste generation and preserve natural resources. Waste reduction is broader in scope than recycling and incorporates ways to prevent materials from ending up as waste before they reach the recycling stage (Reduction).”

Reduce Packaged Buying

Reducing waste can be easy as long as we shop durable, reusable and repairable We must avoid products wrapped in plastic and excessively in boxes and bags. Buying in bulk saves more money and can help avoiding individually wrapped items.

Reduce Toxins

Please use non-hazardous or mildly hazardous materials. The best way to remain aware is by reading your product labels and following all directions carefully. When using hazardous materials, be sure to dispose of them properly. Visit WasteXpress to find out more about how to dispose your toxins.

Reuse

Reusing bags, containers and other materials contributes to saving the earth. California’s Proposition 67 banned thin plastic carryout bags at grocery stores statewide, stores charge customers a 10-cent fee for carry out bags. Grocers in California might not be happy about this change but at least their reducing waste.

Sharing is Caring

Many of us own things we only use once a year consider sharing items that require mounds of power and/or just takes up space. Borrowing or renting items like power tools, outdoor equipment allows us to remain cautious of the earth’s life expectancy.
