What does “equanimity” mean?

The answer depends on the context.

In Buddhist teachings, the term equanimity is used in several ways. In this carousel, we explore three traditional uses of the word:

• Equanimity in concentration: allowing the mind to function naturally without unnecessary interference.
• Equanimity as a feeling: a neutral feeling that is neither happiness nor unhappiness.
• Immeasurable equanimity: an even-minded attitude toward all living beings, free from attachment and hostility.

Understanding these different contexts helps us appreciate the richness and precision of Buddhist teachings.

To explore these topics more deeply, join Venerable Tenzin Drolma for Deepen a Caring Heart: From Self-Compassion to Bodhicitta.

Venerable Tenzin Drolma talks about a surprising truth about love: the feeling of love doesn't come from the other person—it comes from within us. When we recognize that love is generated by our own minds and hearts, we can begin to relate to ourselves and others in a deeper, more compassionate way.

What if compassion included you?

Many of us find it easier to extend kindness to others than to ourselves. In this 4-week course, Venerable Tenzin Drolma explores how self-compassion can become the gateway to bodhicitta—the awakened heart dedicated to the welfare of all beings.

Join us this June.

Please join us for a 4-week course on deepening and expanding our loving-kindness and compassion.

Each of us already possesses a basic goodness — a natural caring heart that can be cultivated and expanded. Beginning with self-compassion as our foundation, we will explore how caring for ourselves can deepen our compassion for others and gradually open into bodhicitta, the awakened heart.

Through meditation, listening, contemplation, questioning, and discussion, we will further illuminate and develop this naturally abiding capacity for compassion.

Venerable Lozang Yonten reflects on Suzuki Roshi’s phrase “Zen mind, beginner’s mind.” A beginner’s mind assumes you can learn—so there’s real confidence in it. With effort and joy, why should learning or transformation ever end? Beginner’s mind stays spacious, curious, and open—while “expert mind” hardens and feels like it has something to prove.
