St. Johns Farmers Market

VetREST, a nonprofit that mentors veterans in the healing power of horticulture, will be bringing locally-grown flower bouquets to the market this week! You may have seen them at the market in 2023. We are glad to have them back!

We are proud that many of our vendors get their start here at the St. Johns Farmers Market. Jake Newcomb tells the story of how his business, Newks Hot Sauce, kicked off:

“St. Johns is the birthplace of Newks, and for that reason it holds a really special, nostalgic feeling for us. The original batches were all cooked out of my apartment in St. Johns (yes, it was legal) during the first two years of the business.

There are a lot of great memories from that market, but one of my favorites would have to be the very first time I set up the Newks stand. It was a tiny table with a little chalk written sign that said “Hot Sauces for $8.” It was during the height of COVID, so I was wearing two rubber gloves and two masks. I had no idea what to expect. I figured I might sell a couple bottles, but I ended up selling out of everything.

The positivity and sense of community from that first market day kept me motivated to keep growing the company. We met our very first customers that day, and a lot of them still come back to the stand. It means the world.”

Today, Newks has expanded to vending at markets and festivals around the Portland area and the United States. They recently collaborated with online content creator, Sandwiches of History, to create a Calabrian chili hot sauce. The first batch sold out quickly. Pre-orders for batch #2 are available on their website now.
