The River Church

When he was seven years old, this Sunday's speaker was given a free basketball — and he burst into tears. Not because the basketball was bad. On any other day he'd have run to show his brothers and bragged, got a free basketball, what's up? He cried because his older brother got the G.I. Joe Battle Force 2000 jet — two units in one. Suddenly a perfectly good gift felt like nothing. That's the whole problem the Parable of the Talents exposes in Matthew 25. We're wired to measure our lives by comparing them to the people next to us. And that comparison is exactly what makes the one-talented servant bury his gift in the ground. The master never called any amount big — five talents, two, one, he called all of it little. We've all been given little. The question isn't why did they get more.
