What Happens When a K9 Alerts in a School?
One of the most common questions we get is what happens when a detection dog alerts during a school visit.
Detection dogs are trained to indicate the presence of an odor. They do not search or handle items themselves.
If a dog alerts, school staff and administration determine how they want to handle the situation based on their policies and procedures.
Each school is different, and we work within the structure they already have in place.
The goal of K9 sweeps is safety and deterrence — not punishment.

During a recent routine campus safety sweep, one of the schools we work with offered students an opportunity to voluntarily surrender v**e devices prior to the search.
Four devices were turned in that day, and those students were directed to attend a v**e safety education class rather than face disciplinary action.
Programs like this allow schools to combine education, accountability, and prevention when addressing va**ng on campus.
During the same campus visit, a prohibited item was also located concealed under a bathroom sink.
While detection K9s are trained to locate ma*****na, v**e devices, and other drugs, routine sweeps often help school staff identify additional safety concerns that might otherwise go unnoticed.
