That dog isn't wearing a vest, so it's not a service dog, right?

Nope! There's a lot of misconceptions around what service dogs wear. Unfortunately, anyone can just buy a service dog label to put on their dog. Add that to the fact that some service dogs work naked, and it can be confusing. If you can't rely on a vest to ID a service dog, how can you know it's a service dog?

A service dog's behavior is the best way to know. A service dog is well-behaved and focused on its job rather than randomly sniffing, vocalizing, or asking for attention. Some dogs do bark, nudge, or jump as a part of their job, so it may take a trained eye to notice the difference. One is controlled and targeted towards the handler, while one is out-of-control and often targeted towards third parties or items. If you're a business, you are allowed to ask the two questions explicitly stated in the ADA and remove an animal if it's behaving inappropriately.
