New research from NEC Laboratories America and Arizona State University tackles one of retrieval-augmented generation’s biggest blind spots. "Learning to Route" introduces a rule-driven agent framework that decides whether to query a document corpus or a relational database and gets smarter over time.

Experiments on three QA datasets demonstrate that the framework consistently outperforms static strategies and learned routing baselines, achieving higher accuracy while maintaining moderate computational cost.
