Note the significant divergence between U.S. society and Israeli society. The demonstrations against Trumpism here yesterday were the largest in American history. Meanwhile Israelis are, almost by consensus, expressing love and admiration for Trump and Netanyahu.

She's a working plumber. In fact, during the campaign she got certified to do plastering work! She never had thoughts of being a politician. She joined the Greens on the basis of an animal rights interest and a disgust with our society's rampant wealth inequality.

“a seismic moment” . . .

Green Party wins UK by-election in blow to Labour, PM Starmer
Progressive Greens win closely watched election in one-time Labour stronghold, while right-wing Reform comes second.
By Al Jazeera Staff and Reuters 2/27/2026
A candidate for the United Kingdom’s left-wing Green Party has comfortably won a closely-watched election for a vacant parliamentary seat, delivering an embarrassing defeat for Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Labour Party in one of its former strongholds. Results announced Friday showed the Greens’ Hannah Spencer, a 34-year-old city council member and plumber, had won 40.7 percent of the vote in the by-election in Gorton and Denton, a constituency in Greater Manchester that has been considered a secure Labour seat for almost a century. In an outcome that analysts said pointed to the fracturing of the UK’s traditional two-party politics, the hard-right candidate for the populist, anti-immigration Reform finished in second place. Labour, which had won more than half the vote in Gorton and Denton at the last general election in 2024, finished a bruising third. The Green Party has positioned itself as an alternative to Labour, arguing that the governing party has moved away from some of the values it once championed. The Greens, and their party leader Zack Polanski, have been vocal in their condemnation of Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza and their support for Palestinians. Many Labour voters have been infuriated by the government’s ongoing diplomatic support for Israel through the carnage it has wrought in Gaza and the occupied West Bank. Political scientist John Curtice called the result a “seismic moment” that signalled that the “future of British politics looks more uncertain than at any stage” since the end of World War II, the Reuters news agency reported.

A huge win for the Greens yesterday electing their fifth Member of Parliament. Of note is that the duopoly has been broken in the UK. It has now become a five-party system in a country that suffers from the kind of winner-take-all (rather than proportional representation) system that our own electorate suffers from in the United States.
The Labour Party vote declined by 25%. The Green Party vote increased by 27% (to over 40%). The Conservative Party candidate received only 3% of the vote!

“the Greens now appear to be the most plausible opposition to take on the extreme right” (UK)

How is Reform’s charmless candidate still a contender in Gorton and Denton? Ask Labour
By George Monbiot 2/25/2026
This byelection should have been a stroll for Keir Starmer’s party. Instead, all hope of defeating Matt Goodwin now seems to lie with the Greens
Every barb Labour has directed at the Greens can now be returned with interest. “It’s a wasted vote.” “Do you want to see Reform in power?” New polling ahead of the crucial Gorton and Denton byelection this week, while by no means decisive, puts the Greens first on 22%, followed by Reform UK (20%), then Labour (18%), with 31% undecided. But still Keir Starmer falsely claims that “only Labour can beat Reform”. Does he want to see Reform in power?
I’m not a party person. I subscribe to the old-fashioned belief that journalists should have no political loyalties. But I see the Greens stepping into the howling void Labour has vacated and becoming everything you might have wanted Labour to be. In their byelection contender, Hannah Spencer, they have a brilliant candidate: a working plumber and plasterer with first-hand experience of the cracks and leaks in our social fabric and bright ideas for fixing them. Here and in many other constituencies, the Greens now appear to be the most plausible opposition to take on the extreme right.
YouGov’s voting intention polls show that since January 2025, Labour’s national share has declined from 26% to 18%, on a steady downward cruise that no rhetoric, U-turn or reboot has been able to jolt. The Greens, in contrast, on an equally steady trajectory, have risen in the same period from 8% to 17%. Throughout the Gorton and Denton contest, the gambling companies have judged them the best bet. So if, as Labour claims, the key aim is to stop Reform UK from gaining power, it should stand its candidate down and let the Greens walk home.
