At HopeHealth, we’re proud to support professionals who are helping shape the next generation of compassionate, patient-centered physicians.

Read this reflection from Lindsay Coe on her work in the Doctoring Program at Brown University Medical School:

"In my role as a social worker and “social behavioral sciences” (SBS) faculty within the Doctoring Program at Brown University Medical School, I have brought a perspective grounded in the social determinants of health, patient-centered communication, and trauma-informed care. I began in the fall of ’22 and fell in love with the program right away. My training has allowed me to highlight how factors such as socioeconomic status, cultural background, access to resources, and systemic inequities shape patient experiences and health outcomes. Throughout the program, I have helped work to integrate these principles into clinical skills training, helping students move beyond a purely biomedical model toward a more holistic understanding of patient care.

A key takeaway from this experience has been the students’ increasing awareness of the importance of context in patient care. Many have demonstrated growth in their ability to engage patients with curiosity and respect, and to consider barriers that may impact adherence, access, and overall well-being. It has been rewarding to see students begin to integrate these insights into their clinical reasoning and communication styles.

This role has reinforced the value of interdisciplinary perspectives in medical education. By embedding social and behavioral science principles into early clinical training, my hope is to help shape more compassionate, reflective, and culturally responsive physicians. I believe my contributions have supported students in developing not only technical skills, but also the empathy and critical thinking necessary to provide equitable and patient-centered care."
