Wheeler School

We had a great time welcoming new families to our Providence campus last night, where they got to know one another and their mentor families…and a few of the younger students got to know the gaga pit!

“It was a lovely evening filled with happy families,” says Director of Enrollment Anna Curtis P’36, P’38. “It’s always so exciting to see new friendships form and knowing there are many school adventures to come!”

We were able to catch a pretty neat moment this morning when two Wheeler leaders, past and present, put their heads together for a brief conversation.

Dan Miller P’15, P’17, who was our seventh head of school from 2003-2017 and now lives on the West Coast, was back on our Providence campus for the first time in several years. “It’s surreal,” he said, looking around his old office. “When you spend every day here for 14 years, and your kids came through the school and your wife taught at the school, it becomes cellular.

“And then, when you don’t come for a long time, just walking around and seeing people you haven’t seen since 2017 becomes kind of an out of body experience.

“It feels good though. I have such undiluted, positive feelings about the school, there’s no awkwardness or anything, but love. I’m really glad that Mark’s here now,” he said, gesturing across the office table towards our current head of school, Mark Anderson P’27. “I’m glad he is going to help the school take the next step.”

For his part, Mr. Anderson said he was happy to have the opportunity to ask Mr. Miller some questions – and to give him a tour of some of the campus changes since he was last at Wheeler. “Any time you can welcome back former colleagues, whether they’re teachers or staff or heads of school, it’s just a joy to bring people back who gave so much to the life of this place.”
