🚨 FOSTERS NEEDED 🚨

Right now, we have friendly cats waiting for a chance at a better life, but without foster homes, many of them have nowhere to go.

We know fostering can feel intimidating, especially if you've never done it before. If you've ever thought about fostering but weren't sure you could, these myths might sound familiar:

🐾 "I have other pets, so I can't foster."
Many of our fosters have pets of their own! Foster cats can be kept completely separate from resident pets if needed. A spare bathroom, bedroom, or even a large crate setup can work beautifully.

🐾 "I don't have enough space."
You don't need an entire room. A small, safe area is often all that's required. We've had cats thrive in bathrooms, offices, walk-in closets, and other small spaces.

🐾 "I'll get too attached."
You probably will, and that's okay. Getting attached means you've helped them feel safe and loved. The goal of fostering isn't to keep them forever. It's to help them find the family they deserve. At Ten Lives, our fosters are part of that process.

🐾 "I can't afford it."
We provide medical care and help with supplies. Your biggest contribution is providing a safe place for a cat to land.

🐾 "What if something happens?"
You're never doing this alone. Our team is here to answer questions, provide guidance, and coordinate veterinary care when needed.

Without foster homes, friendly cats lose their opportunity to come inside, decompress, socialize, and find adoptive homes. Every foster opening creates space for another cat in need.

If you've been thinking about fostering, now is the time. Even one spare bathroom, one extra crate, or one temporary commitment can change a life.

Foster Requirements:
👉 All fosters must reside in Rhode Island.
👉 Renters welcome with landlord permission!
👉 To ensure a safe, healthy environment for both resident pets and incoming fosters, all resident animals in the home must be spayed or neutered, seen annually by a veterinarian, and kept up to date on vaccinations.
👉 Space to quarantine for a minimum of 2 weeks
Please apply today to become a foster and help us continue our lifesaving work ❤️

This week we’re taking in three cats from Ocean State Veterinary Specialists and Bay State Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Services - two senior cats and one very itchy little kitten with ringworm.

Both hospitals reached out independently over the weekend looking for help, and thanks to our incredible foster network, we were able to confidently say yes (no frantic group chat spirals required… this time).

Meet the patients:
🐾 Quill (black & white senior)
Quill comes with a few extras on his “welcome package,” including an ear infection and significant dental disease. Like all of our seniors, he’ll also be getting a full blood panel + urinalysis as part of our basic intake protocol, that baseline workup runs $300+ before we even get to dental care.

🐾 Orange & white senior (FIV+)
He’ll also receive the same full senior workup and is very likely headed for a dental once fully evaluated due to his FIV+ status. These dentals typically run $1,500–$2,000 per cat depending on what we find once we’re in there, since cats always love a surprise plot twist!

🐾 Tiny ringworm kitten
✨ 21 days of medication
✨ PCR and culture (~$200)
✨ 6–8 weeks of quarantine
✨✨Possibly another 6–8 weeks if she’s not fully cleared after the first round!

In other words, she’s about to enjoy a very structured little timeout while she gets the care she needs.

It’s a big financial lift, but this is exactly what community support makes possible.

Funds from 401 Gives and the Raise Your Paws for a Cause auction are what turn “we wish we could” into “we’ve got them.” Not just for routine care, but for the messy, expensive, absolutely necessary medical work that gives these cats a real second chance.

We couldn’t do this without you - thank you!

For months now, this colony in Chepachet has lived in the back of our minds every single day. We’re pretty sure it’s consumed our Community Cat Lead Heather’s life in a way that should probably qualify as its own full-time job (or at least an extreme sport 😅).

Every time we thought we were making progress, another cat would appear. Another litter. Another pregnant mom. Another group of kittens trying to survive outside. Still, our team kept showing up, determined to help however we could.

Right in the middle of all of this, we got word about a giant litter of kittens hidden on the property.

For days, Heather searched for them. When she finally found the babies, mama cat was right there with them. Heather safely contained mama on a porch while trying to secure her, and spent FIVE hours attempting to trap her using the kittens as a lure… but mama just wouldn’t go in.

With eight tiny 2.5-week-old kittens needing immediate care, Heather brought them home for the night and bottle-fed every single one of them every 2–3 hours completely on her own while continuing efforts to reunite the family.

The next morning, after even more patience and persistence, mama was finally trapped safely and reunited with all EIGHT of her babies. 🖤

This video is from that very first reunion, and after everything this family had survived outside, it was such a huge relief to finally have them safe together.

A few weeks later, the kittens are continuing to grow, and like many community cats, mama has started becoming more independent and less interested in caring for them as they get older. She may end up returning to us from our friends at Tiny Paws for some extra socialization and continued evaluation while the babies continue thriving in care.

And while this family got safely off the streets, the reality is that the work in this area is far from over. Since this all began, we’ve now helped WELL over 50 cats from this colony and surrounding nearby colonies through rescue and TNR efforts. Every time we think we’re nearing the end, more cats appear needing help.

We’re incredibly grateful to PawsWatch at the Community Cat Center for continuing to work alongside us on neighboring colonies, and to Tiny Paws Kitten Care of Rhode Island for stepping up to take on this enormous family and give them the care they deserve.

No cat should have to raise babies outside. No kittens should have to begin their lives struggling to survive outdoors. Situations like this are exactly why spay and neuter work matters so deeply. 🐾
