In the last two weeks, something felt a little different in Provo and Orem. Maybe you noticed fewer knocks on doors, or that no one showed up with a backpack full of warm tamales. Maybe you just missed the familiar faces that became part of this community’s routine.
Some of you knew them as “Nínive,” others as “Tamale Guy and Lady,” or simply Silvia and Emmanuel. You might even still have them in your Venmo contacts. However you knew them, they likely made it to your doorstep at some point over the past 11 years.
That won’t be the case anymore.
Last week, Silvia and Emmanuel boarded a plane and landed safely back home in Mexico. After nearly 14 years away, they’ve finally reunited with the part of their family they missed so deeply. It’s a huge transition, and while we’ll all need time to adjust, we’re just so happy for them.
For over a decade, they walked the streets of this city, met hundreds of families, watched kids grow up, and became woven into the fabric of our neighborhoods. They’d come home every night with stories about how the little ones they met years ago were now in college, how tall they’d gotten, how many new siblings had come along.
It was a long run, and a good one. Their love, hard work, and warm smiles left a mark on so many lives here.
They’ve left behind a legacy, and yes, even a little piece of their family that still carries on in this community. Things won’t be the same, but we believe change can be good. Maybe one day the family will be whole again. Until then, we’ll hold on tight to the memories they made here in what was once their home ❤️‍🩹
