Today I had the extraordinary opportunity to witness firsthand one of the ways conservationists are working to protect Africa’s magnificent white rhinos. 🦏
From a helicopter, an experienced wildlife veterinary team carefully located and darted a white rhino with a tranquilizer. After a long run, the rhino peacefully went down, allowing the team to work swiftly and safely. During that short window, they monitored its breathing, covered its eyes to reduce stress, administered deworming medication and inoculations, completed a health assessment, and carefully removed the horns using specialized equipment.
The purpose is protection. White rhinos are heavily targeted by poachers because of the illegal demand for their horns, even though rhino horn is made of keratin—the same substance as our hair and fingernails—and holds no proven medicinal value.
By removing most of the horn, conservationists make the animal far less attractive to poachers. The horn will grow back over time, much like a fingernail, so this is not a permanent harm, but rather a temporary measure to help save a life and must be done every couple of years.
Seeing this magnificent creature wake up, stand, and walk away was something I will never forget. It was a humbling reminder that protecting wildlife sometimes requires difficult but compassionate intervention.
The southern white rhino is one of conservation’s hopeful stories—once brought back from the brink of extinction—but poaching continues to threaten their future.
Motivated by love—for these majestic animals, for conservation, and for future generations who deserve to see them in the wild. ❤️
