Meet one of our more unique visitors—a Père David’s deer fawn! 🦌❤️

This adorable little guy belongs to one of the rarest deer species in the world, and he has quite the story!

Here are a few fun facts:
🦌 Père David’s deer are native to China and were once extinct in the wild. Thanks to conservation efforts and breeding programs, they’re making an incredible comeback.

🌊 Unlike most deer, they actually love water! They’re excellent swimmers and are often found wading through ponds and marshes, where they snack on aquatic plants.

🦌 Their antlers are unlike any other deer’s. Mature males can even grow two sets of antlers in a single year, making them truly one of a kind.

✨ As babies, they’re born with the classic white spots that help camouflage them, just like many other deer species. Those spots fade as they grow.

We’re always excited when we get the chance to care for such amazing animals. Isn’t this little one absolutely precious? ❤️

🎆 Holiday Office Closure Reminder 🇺🇸

As we celebrate America’s 250th birthday, all of us at Pryor Veterinary Hospital, Pryor Veterinary Hospital South, and Salina Animal Medical Clinic wish you and your family a fun, safe, and memorable Fourth of July!

Please note that all three clinics will be closed on Saturday, July 4th, in observance of Independence Day. We will resume our normal business hours on Monday, July 6th.

Whether you’re enjoying fireworks, grilling with family, or spending the day on the lake, don’t forget to keep your pets safe. Make sure they’re wearing identification, have a secure place away from fireworks, and have any needed anxiety medications on board before the festivities begin.

Have a wonderful Independence Day, and here’s to celebrating 250 years of American freedom. We look forward to seeing you and your pets when we reopen on Monday!

☀️ Oklahoma heat is here… and it can become dangerous for our four-legged family members faster than you think. 🐶❤️

Dogs don’t sweat like we do—they rely on panting to cool themselves down. When temperatures climb, heatstroke can happen in just minutes, especially for puppies, senior pets, overweight dogs, and flat-faced breeds.

Here are a few simple ways to help keep your pet safe this summer:
💧 Always provide plenty of fresh, cool water.
🌳 Make sure they have access to shade.
🚫 Never leave your pet in a parked vehicle—not even for a minute.
🐾 Check the pavement with the back of your hand for 7 seconds. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for their paws.
🌅 Save walks and outdoor playtime for the early morning or late evening.

Know the warning signs of heatstroke: excessive panting, bright red gums, drooling, weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, glazed eyes, or collapse.

If you think your pet may be suffering from heatstroke, move them to a cool area, begin cooling them with cool (not ice-cold) water, and seek veterinary care immediately. Heatstroke is a medical emergency, and every minute matters.
