June 19, 1865 - General Order No. 3 - declared enslaved persons equal citizens to their former masters and declared the relationship one between employer and employee. While the order also denied access to military service, it sparked what would become known as "the Scatter" as formerly enslaved individuals moved to more accepting areas in pursuit of a better life. Over the next 156 years, Juneteenth would be celebrated with rodeos, reunions, festivals, and gatherings of all kinds. In 2021, Juneteenth became a federal holiday.
