As an artist who paints strange, sometimes n**e work, I understood Jules immediately.

When your art isn’t traditional praise rarely comes easy. Instead, people ask: What does it mean? Why does she have to be naked? Even if I explain every stroke some people still don’t get it. I think Jules believed she was finally being chosen for her authentic artistic voice — only to be rejected the moment she showed up authentically. I’d cry too. I understand why she destroyed the painting. She was refusing to water herself down for approval or commercial success. Which can be hard, isolating, and very sad. I respect that deeply because I’d rather create art that is fully mine than make work that simply feels safe and easy to consume.

So needless to say… don’t ask me to paint you a picnic.
