811 DOES NOT LOCATE PRIVATE UTILITIES โš ๏ธ๐Ÿšง
๐Ÿ“ž Many contractors believe that calling 811 is enough before excavationโ€ฆ

But there is a critical detail that can cost thousands of dollars:
811 does NOT locate private utilities.

Before any digging project, 811 helps mark public utilities such as main lines located in public right-of-way areas.

However, many underground utilities inside private property are NOT included in the 811 service.

This creates a hidden risk that often leads to unexpected damages during excavation.

โš ๏ธ Common private utilities NOT marked by 811
๐Ÿ”ต Water lines to buildings
๐Ÿ”ด Electrical lines to lighting poles or structures
๐ŸŸข Private sewer and drain lines
๐ŸŸ  Internet and fiber lines ุฏุงุฎู„ la propiedad
๐ŸŸฃ Irrigation systems

Why this is a serious problem
โ€ข Contractors assume all utilities are marked
โ€ข Private lines remain undetected
โ€ข Excavation begins with incomplete information
โ€ข Damages lead to delays, repairs, and liability
๐Ÿ’ฐ One damaged utility line can cost thousands in repairs and lost time.

๐Ÿ“Œ As explained in our blog:
811 is an important first step โ€” but it is not a complete solution for safe excavation.

โš ๏ธ Private utilities require professional locating before excavation.

THE MOST COMMON UTILITIES HIT DURING EXCAVATION โš ๏ธ๐Ÿšง

Every day, excavation projects begin without fully understanding what is buried underground.

Unfortunately, striking a hidden utility is more common than many contractors think.

Damaging underground infrastructure can cause project delays, costly repairs, service interruptions, and serious safety risks.

Knowing which utilities are most frequently damaged can help contractors take the right precautions before digging.

โš ๏ธ The 5 most common utilities hit during excavation
๐Ÿ”ต Private water lines
Often installed after construction and rarely documented.
๐ŸŸข Sewer and drain lines
These pipes are commonly located near buildings and foundations.
๐Ÿ”ด Private electrical lines
Used for lighting poles, buildings, gates, or parking areas.
๐ŸŸ  Communication and fiber optic cables
Internet and telecom lines are frequently shallow and difficult to detect without proper equipment.
๐ŸŸก Gas service lines
One of the most dangerous utilities to damage during excavation.

Why these damages happen
โ€ข Incomplete utility records
โ€ข Private utilities not marked by public systems
โ€ข Excavation starting without professional locating
โ€ข Utilities installed years after the original construction

๐Ÿ’ฐ Hitting just one underground utility can cost thousands of dollars in repairs and delays.

Before digging, contractors should ensure that all underground utilities โ€” both public and private โ€” are properly located.

โš ๏ธ Safe excavation always starts with utility locating.

โš ๏ธ CALL BEFORE YOU CUT THE PAVEMENT

If you suspect a broken underground water line, always locate nearby utilities before excavation. This simple step can prevent damaging power, gas, communication, or other critical underground services.

โ„๏ธ EMERGENCY WATER LINE BREAK AFTER EXTREME FREEZE

On January 29, we received an emergency request after the main water supply pipe of a residential complex broke due to extreme cold weather following heavy snowfall.

Temperatures dropped to 20ยฐF, causing the water inside the pipe to freeze and expand, creating extreme pressure that eventually fractured the pipe beneath the pavement.

๐Ÿ“ Contractor: AJET Plumbing
๐Ÿ“ Location: 835 Navaho Dr, Raleigh, NC
๐Ÿ“ Service Date: 01/29/2026

Our team arrived on site to locate and mark underground utilities around the leak area, allowing the plumbing crew to safely cut the pavement and repair the damaged pipe without hitting other buried infrastructure.

๐Ÿ‘ทโ€โ™‚๏ธ Work performed on site

โ€ข Marking of underground utilities around the repair zone
โ€ข Identification of the main water supply pipe
โ€ข Location of nearby utilities to prevent accidental damage
โ€ข Coordination with the supervisor before excavation

๐Ÿ”ฌ Why pipes break during extreme cold

Water expands when it freezes. At 32ยฐF (0ยฐC) it turns to ice and increases its volume by about 9%.
Inside a pipe, this expansion creates extreme pressure that can exceed the resistance of materials like PVC or copper, causing cracks or rupture.

Often the pipe cracks during freezing, but the leak becomes visible only when the ice melts and water begins escaping.

โš ๏ธ Safe excavation always starts with utility locating.
