CHILDREN LAUGH LOUDER WITH HAPPY DAN! Happy Dan's zany character recalls the fun of live television

Parents, your sometimes annoying "Mini Me" shadow is a loving compliment.

We spend so much time trying to "manage" our kids that we forget they are literally just tiny humans obsessed with the way we move.

If they’re following you into the bathroom, it’s because you’re their safe harbor.

If they’re asking "Why?" for the 40th time, it’s because they trust you to have the answers to the universe.

If they’re melting down because you cut the toast into triangles instead of squares, it’s because you are the only person in the world they feel safe enough to be "wrong" around.

Nurturing isn't a scheduled activity. It’s not a sensory bin or a Pinterest craft.

It’s the 2-second eye contact when they interrupt your Zoom call.

It’s the "I hear you" when they’re screaming about a lost Lego.

It’s the way you soften your shoulders when they walk into the room.

We’re not just raising children; we’re inserting the voice and wisdom they’ll eventually use to talk themselves through life's situations. Make sure the voice they hear in their head sounds a lot like yours when you’re being kind.

Stop trying to be a perfect parent and just be a present one. The dishes can wait. Your "shadow" won't be there forever.

Not surprisingly, my top idols are all children's entertainers. In the 1950's when television was new, Bob Keeshan worked as Clarabell the Clown on The Howdy Doody Show. For forty dollars a week, he honked a horn and never spoke a word. Kids loved him but he worried about the noise, the constant slapstick, and the relentless advertising aimed at children.

When CBS handed him the keys to his own show, Captain Kangaroo, he insisted on gentleness. With quiet defiance, he didn’t just create Captain Kangaroo, he created a sanctuary for children in a noisy world and promised that he would never be the reason a child felt small.

Like Mister Rogers, Keeshan's Captain Kangaroo shows began with the slow swing of a door and the Captain’s warm greeting, “Good morning, children.” He filled his show with warmth and lessons that always cared, never scolded.

Producers begged him to accept cereal and toy sponsors. He refused them all. “Children need calm more than candy,” he told CBS executives, in a tone as firm as it was tender. That conviction made Captain Kangaroo the longest-running children’s program in network history with more than six thousand episodes of laughter, empathy, and unhurried wonder. Keeshan lobbied against TV advertising aimed at children telling Congress, "We’re not raising consumers—we’re raising people.”

When asked late in life why he never raised his voice on camera, he smiled. “The world already teaches them to shout,” he said softly. “I wanted to teach them to listen.”

Bob Keeshan didn’t just entertain children, he embraced them with warmth, gentleness, and patience. My kidshow character, Happy Dan, has always tried to follow the noble examples of Bob Keeshan, Fred Rogers, and Cleveland's Linn Sheldon. I had just moved to Raleigh in 1993 and was in the early stages of creating Happy Dan. In August of that year I had the opportunity to meet and thank him for creating my character's role model. I have thought about and lived his generous advice every day since.

Thank you for joining me on this wonderful journey.

Rumor - Happy Dan is retiring! Well, yes - and no. My quest for the biggest laughs and a compassionate connection with children and their parents has carried me across the U.S., Canada, and Europe. Today, my greatest joy is watching an adult I once entertained as a child relive their experience through their own child. These shared smiles are the greatest of all treasures.

Time slowly fills the pages of our life's book. Six decades of hugs and laughter have kept my heart young, kind, and cheerful. This body, however, has begun its pestering sleeve tugging with a nagging whisper, "It's time to slow down."

My life is defined by your love and laughter, so I plan to continue creating the Biggest Little Laughs in the Carolinas for as long as my young friends need me and my mind and body allow. But I must grudgingly embrace this new phase of semi-retirement. I will pass all extended outdoor events on to my younger and superbly talented peers. I've reduced my daily schedule to one-or-two appearances or parties per day. I plan to remain active, but at a somewhat more leisurely pace. With fewer slots, my calendar will fill quickly, so if you MUST have Happy Dan, please plan ahead.

I warmly invite you to continue sending your requests. I will do my best to make them happen. If I cannot, I will happily refer you to equally talented and reliable younger peers who share my love for children and their laughter. Thank you all for the many years of trust, laughter, and cherished memories.
