Russian born Irving Berlin (Israel Beilin), the composer and lyricist, is one of the greatest songwriters in American history and his music forms a large part of the Great American Songbook.

Despite not being able to write music or play piano except in the key of F sharp, he wrote more than 1,000 songs that appear in Broadway musicals, Hollywood films and TV shows.

Many of his songs have become popular anthems including Alexander's Ragtime Band, Easter Parade, Puttin on the Ritz, Cheek to Cheek, God Bless America, White Christmas, and There's No Business Like Show Business.

His songs have been rerecorded by many of the greats including Bob Dylan, Linda Ronstadt, Frank Sinatra, Billie Holliday, Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald and Leonard Cohen.

He decided that all the royalties from God Bless America go to the Boy and Girl Scouts and Campfire Girls.
