Great seeing so many friends in Las Vegas at the APPA conference.

The Texas Juvenile Justice Department understands how child abuse can alter a life. Many youth at TJJD were the victims of physical, emotional or sexual abuse.

• On the ACES scale, which measures Adverse Childhood Experiences, many TJJD youth report physical abuse (29%), emotional abuse (32%) and having lived with family violence (54%).

• 50% of TJJD youth have experienced four or more ACEs, compared with about 13% percent of the general population.

Exposure to violence and other adverse events in childhood increases the risk of injury and disease throughout life, such as delayed brain development, lower educational attainment and stress and conduct disorders. It also raises the odds a person will become a victim or perpetrator of violence, according to the US Centers for Disease Control.

TJJD has adopted a new paradigm, called Trauma Informed Corrections, which recognizes that youthful offenders’ traumatic backgrounds must be considered if rehabilitation is to be successful.
