What a rope-tastic afternoon at Roping Basics: Championship Secrets for all Ages!

Participants joined us at Ghost Rock Ranch for a hands-on introduction to the art of ground roping, guided by none other than Judy Robinson, 1978 World Champion All-Around Cowgirl. From learning how to properly coil and handle a rope to building a loop, aiming with confidence, and pulling slack like a pro, attendees got plenty of practice and one-on-one coaching every step of the way.

The workshop wrapped up with a friendly rope-off challenge, giving everyone a chance to put their new skills to the test and celebrate how much they learned in just a few short hours. Whether it was their very first time holding a rope or they were sharpening existing skills, participants left with a stronger foundation and a deeper appreciation for this classic ranching tradition.

What a wonderful afternoon of weaving, learning, and connecting at our Pine Needle Basket Weaving Intro workshop!

Participants spent four hands-on hours exploring the traditional art of pine needle basketry with instructor Lorraine Lapekes, learning the foundational technique of coiling—a method of spiraling and stitching Ponderosa pine needles into beautiful baskets. From identifying suitable pine needles to mastering the use of gauges, weaving needles, and cordage, everyone left with new skills, new confidence, and the tools to continue their basket-making journey at home.

One of the joys of artisan skills is discovering just how much patience, practice, and creativity go into a handcrafted piece. While pine needle basket weaving is a slow and intentional process, participants got a solid start on their own baskets and gained the knowledge needed to keep weaving long after the workshop ended.

Of course, no School of Ranch gathering is complete without good company, and sharing a potluck meal together made the day even sweeter.

What a fantastic evening of chicken talk, flock planning, and community connection!

At our Chicken Farming for Self-Reliant Families workshop, participants explored the essentials of raising healthy, productive chickens in Central Oregon. Together, we covered how to choose breeds that fit your goals, create safe and comfortable coops, and handle the basics of flock health care throughout the seasons.

Through guided discussions and practical examples, attendees gained the knowledge and confidence needed to start planning their own backyard flocks—or improve the ones they already have. And, of course, no School of Ranch gathering is complete without sharing food and stories around a potluck table.

Whether your dream is fresh eggs, a more self-reliant homestead, or simply the joy of tending a flock, we loved helping participants take the next step on their chicken-keeping journey.

What a day at Warm Springs Craft and Culture Day: Weaving and More!

We spent the day immersed in tradition, creativity, and community while learning the beautiful art of Sally bag weaving with master weaver Valerie Switzler.

Participants got hands-on experience starting a Sally Bag using the Wasco flat-bottom technique, practicing twining methods, and building confidence working with traditional weaving materials. Along the way, we explored the rich cultural context behind this enduring art form, gaining a deeper appreciation for the knowledge and traditions that continue to be shared across generations.

The day was made even more special with a shared potluck meal, plenty of conversation, and a private museum tour that added even more depth and connection to the experience.

A huge thank you to Valerie for sharing her expertise, stories, and warm-hearted teaching. Opportunities to learn directly from culture bearers and master craftspeople are what make gatherings like this so meaningful.
