Central Oregon Community College receives $2.2M federal grant to boost machining and welding program 02/02/2026

Redmond is officially on the map as a manufacturing powerhouse. 📍

With a new $2.2M federal grant (paired with $8M in state and college funding), Central Oregon Community College is set to transform its manufacturing technology department. This investment supports a sector that Steve Curley, Executive Director of REDI (Redmond Economic Development Inc.), identifies as a "growing, good wage job in Central Oregon."

Steve noted a major shift in the industry that we should all be paying attention to:

“As more automation comes into the manufacturing space, you see upskilling to where someone who maybe was doing welding is now programming a robot that's doing welding.”

This grant will provide the high-tech equipment and short-term certifications needed to keep our local economy competitive while helping workers pivot into these advanced technical roles. It’s a win for students, a win for local employers like BASX and Nosler, and a win for the future of Redmond.

Proud to see REDI and COCC - Redmond leading the charge in creating sustainable, future-proof career paths for our community!

Recently, our staff had the privilege of volunteering as "merchants" for the Bite of Reality workshop hosted by Mid Oregon Credit Union and Heart of Oregon Corps. It was incredible to see students' faces change from "I’ve got this" to "Wait, how much does childcare cost?!" as they worked through real-life financial scenarios.

This program is a massive success because it meets students where they are. Using a mobile app and real-world scenarios, it transforms "boring" budgeting into an interactive challenge.

A huge thank you to the Mid Oregon team for helping build a more financially savvy future for our local students. It’s more than just banking; it’s about building a stronger community. Make a difference and check out Mid Oregon Credit Union’s – Bite of Reality page for upcoming volunteer opportunities near you!
