It has come to my attention that one of my favorite hospitals in the area, has a childbirth class that is spreading misinformation. Reading the PubMed article attached we can see that the rate of jaundice in babies at high altitude changes from 16%, up to 39% when over 5000 feet elevation.

However the misinformation being shared is that delayed cord clamping can increase the chances of jaundice or make it worse. Delayed court clamping allows all of baby's blood to go to baby. I didn't see why it would make any sense to deny baby of their own blood and how that could be medically beneficial. So I started digging. There is absolutely zero scientific evidence that delayed cord clamping can increase rates of jaundice when at high elevation.

Please understand when you attend classes at hospitals, that they are geared towards making you a more complicit patient. Hospital based classes are not built on teaching you your own power, autonomy, and right to informed consent. Please prioritize taking Independent classes from third parties, not classes or Support that are under the control of the hospital, a medical environment that does not know enough about physiological birth to be useful during a physiological birth.

Hospitals and medical staff are specifically to help when there is a medical emergency. Giving birth is not a medical emergency. However if there is a medical emergency that happens, we are lucky to have access to hospitals that are experienced in life-saving care. But we must hold the line to hold back medicalized industry from interfering with physiological birth.  Evidence Based Birth Doula
